My Evaluation (Text Only)

· In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
My magazine was inspired a lot of different magazines from different genres but I would say mainly by VIBE magazine as my magazine was partly a hip hop magazine as well. I looked at the layout, colour scheme and the mastheads they used, to get inspired. I noticed that with most magazines the masthead would be placed behind the heads of the artists, but that depended on how popular the artist was and also if the magazine itself was popular enough to partly hide the magazines name.
In my magazine (RnBsSoul) my artist “Nicki Ross” is slightly covering up the masthead, because even though the magazine is quite new, which means that the masthead should actually be in front of the artists head, so that people could read it, I wanted her to be the centre of attention, because due to her popularity people would buy the magazine, and like that they would get familiar with the magazines name. By having the masthead in white and being on a black background it stands out and catches the audience’s attention, and at the same time it brings calmness and softness into the front page. This was important as the name of the artist is in a bold red, which shows the passion, so it needed a color to bring calmness, so that it would be balanced. I used the following conventions to make my magazine look like a real magazine: Barcode (so that my magazine can get scanned), cover lines (Nicky Jane Ross and stories that are in the magazine), I did this so that when people saw the cover lines it would attract them to buying the magazine, as well to just give them a little inside to the magazine. I made sure that some cover lines are bigger than others, as this shows the importance of the different stories, and as Nicky Ross is the centre of attention in my magazine, it was very important that her cover line was the biggest one. As she is a well-known artist, a lot of people would be attracted to her story and therefore buy the magazine. For the placements of the cover lines, I looked at other magazines to get inspired, and saw that most of the time the cover lines were placed around the central image, but without distracting or confusing the readers, it rather made it more appealing. So that’s what made me place my cover lines around the image as well.
I wanted to challenge other magazines by not just having one genre as most magazines, that’s why my magazine represents both old and new school of both RnB and Soul. This gives me a wider audience but also makes my magazine stand out from others and makes it break out of the stereotype. Throughout my magazine I kept my color scheme consistent. So that it wouldn’t lose its focus. I mainly used red, black and white on my magazine. The red represent the passion of RnBSSoul and also keeps on catching the readers eye, the black just makes sure it stays calm and doesn’t lose the main focus of the magazine, and the white shows the class and purity in the magazine.I kept the colour scheme consistent throughout the magazine.
My main image of Nicky Jane Ross is a medium-long shot in the middle of the front cover. I made sure that the image was taken in a direct mood, as it is very important that the person on the front cover keeps eye contact with the audience, as that also attracts the audience.
I also tried to follow and develop conventions on both Contents page and my DPS. On my contents page I used more than one image to show other artists that were going to be in the issue and the featured artist. I also placed page numbers on the images so that people only interested in certain artists could look at the image and jump straight to the page. Again I looked at music magazines to get inspired, for my contents page, I tried to keep in close to their layouts so that it would look real. Then for my features and regulars of my magazine I once again looked at different magazines and used parts of their layouts of that as well, for my own magazine.
In my Double Page Spread, I followed conventions by including a small cover story about Nicky Ross’ struggle with the media and an interview between the artist and the interviewer. I did this because both of these are very common in music magazines. I also used a defining quote from the interview in bold text and placed it on the side of the interview so the reader can get a sense of what certain questions will be about, I got this idea when I was doing my case study(VIBE magazine interview with Solange Knowles. This is something that is used very often in magazines.
· How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My media product represents both male and females and probably has a wider age range (18-35) as usual magazines as it represents both old and new school music. Because my magazine doesn’t just represent one genre as well, (as it represents both RnB and Soul) it gives me a wider audience, but mainly black people as they are most liekly to listen to RnB and Soul. My artist that I used for RnBsSoul is 25, this is right in between the age bracket, which is good because like that both the younger and older generation can relate to her. Her style, morals and music appeal to everybody is this age range. The central image on the front cover shows a young black woman that is very sexy but still classy. She shows the sexiness by curving her back and resting her hand on her hip, this little but important details help to exaggerating her figure. Even though the dress is quite fitted, I made sure it wasn’t too tight and didn’t show to much skin, so that the image would still have class. Her sophisticated look also shows her class. I used this image because it shows her sex appeal and class very nicely. This is important, because sex sells and the class makes the crucial difference between an porn magazine etc. and an actual music magazine. Females would most likely buy this magazine, because of her appearance/fashion (her hair, make up etc)  as they idolize these celebrates and try to get their inspirations of fashion from them.  Males would probably be attracted to the woman herself, but then in a more sexual way and therefor buy the magazine.
· What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Miller publishing would be a publisher that would be interested in my magazine as they publish a lot of magazines that go into the direction of my magazine such as VIBE magazine, but also Gospel Today. Even though Miller does not just publish one genre my magazine would be the first one that represent more than just one genre in a magazine, and this would be another reason this company would want to publish my magazine, because it would gain much more publicity.
·   Who would be the audience for your media product?
The main audience would be 18 to 30, as my magazine does not only present the new but also the older generation of RnB and Soul. RB’s Soul doesn’t just have one specific social class that it is talking to, but rather covers all of them as it is intellectual, classy, but still hip, fun and easy to read. My magazine will be targeted both at male and females, so I will make sure that there will articles in RB’s Soul that will interest both genders. There is no specific ethnic group that I’m targeting at either, as this genre of music can be listened to by any ethnic group.
· How did you attract/address your audience?
I attracted my audience firstly with my artist that is on the front cover. Secondly I made sure that each cover line speaks to a broad audience and doesn’t narrow it down to just one particular group. I also showed artists fashion in RnBs Soul magazine, their stories (biographies etc.), and the links between oldies and newbies.  I also showed that the magazine has a website, so that people that don’t want to actually go to the store to buy it would have the ability to go online and subscribe and read it there. Like this they can keep up to date easier, and because we live in a society that’s very used to technology and that has become comfortable it will attract more people.  (talk about the language for the dps and explain how  u used technology )
·  Use of models, colours-layout, language, genre and style of content
The colour scheme is calm, classy, but still hip! I achieved this by using white, black and a red. The lettering is in a cursive style. The red represents the passion of the music and magazine. It represents both old and new school of the two genres that I’m using and because old school had a lot of bright colours I thought red would suite it very well, as it shows the fun of the music! The white shows the pureness and elegance of the magazine and shows that unlike other magazines of this genre this magazine is rather representing the class and elegance of the celebrities that are being presented in the magazine. And the black calms the magazine down and evens out the red.
· What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
The process of constructing my product has taught me a lot about using cameras, software such as Adobe Photoshop and InDesign and also websites such as Prezzi and Survey Monkey. When first using the cameras I had a very basic knowledge and didn’t know about important factors such as shot types and lighting. Using the photo studio I got a small inside to a professional photo shoot. I was able to use a lot of equipment I was not familiar with before, this expanded my knowledge about photography. Because of the introduction we had with the photography teacher I did not have any major problems on the day of my photo shoots. All in all it was a fun experience and also thought me a lot about photography and organising a shoot.
For my front cover I used Adobe Photoshop, because I was already familiar with that it wasn’t that difficult, but still challenging as I used it in a different way than I was used to, but now I do feel more comfortable with that program as ability of using it has expanded. I can use more tools and effects and know more than I did before.  Adobe InDesign was something I had to get used to first, as I hadn’t used it before, so at first it was quite tricky, but after I understood the basics of it was fun and helped me to develop my magazine even more. I’m glad that I was able to use it and learn about it, as I feel comfortable on it now.
For questionnaires and presentations I used websites such as Prezi and Survey Monkey. This wasn’t particularly difficult, but I had fun doing it and now know a different way of doing questionnaires and presentations.
·  Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
At first I felt very uncomfortable about this task as I didn’t know anything about it (lighting, colour schemes, shot types, posing etc), but after completing this task I must say I feel much more comfortable with it and can confidently say that I would be able to create another magazine successfully. In this task I learn how important it is to have the right lighting and background as well as clothing as it affects the shoot/ image very much. I believe my skills in planning and improvisation have improved as well, because that’s what this task was mainly about- planning the shoot, dates, layouts for the magazine etc and improvising with the models.  I learned about the importance of planning, by not planning it so well on some parts, because this showed me how much easier it would have been if I would have planned it all out.

My Magazines Survey Monkey Feedback Analysis

Q1. Who do you think the audience of my magazine is?
Most of the people that gave feedback on my magazine thought that the target audience would be 16-25, which could suggest that I didn’t show quite well for who the magazine is.
Q2. What do you think about the layout of my front cover of my magazine?
The four options for this question were good, bad, excellent, or comments. The majority voted that the magazine was good. 25% said that the magazine was excellent and the rest that didn’t voted good or excellent left comments, as no one voted bad. One of the comments were that I should have maybe placed the writing on the front page different.
Q3. What do you think about the layout of my contents page?
For this question I used the same options as the question above (good, bad, excellent, or comments). Again the majority of the people voted good (72%), 12% said that it was excellent and 6% voted that it was bad. The rest (10%) left a comment instead, I would say 5% of those people liked the contents page with just one model more and the other 5% liked the other contents page more.
Q4. What do you think of the layout of my DPS?
This was a quite unanimously vote.  Out of the same options Good, Bad, Excellent, or comments, the majority actually voted for excellent (81%). The rest of the people that completed my questionnaire either voted good (13%) or left a comment (6%), nobody voted for bad.
Q5. What do you think of the colour scheme of the magazine?
Almost everybody that completed the questionnaire used for my magazine RnBsSoul liked my color scheme very much (11% Excellent, 81%Good, 1% Bad and 7% left a comment). The people that left a comment mainly said that the colors that I used (Red, White, and Black) complimented each other and made things (such as my models) stand out even more.  As a critic one person said that the colors that I used were very common colors for a magazine and that I should have thought of something else to make my magazine stand out more from others.
Q6. Who do you think the target audience are, in terms of age, gender and social class?
This question got a very mixed answer. One person thought the age group was around 17-23, had no particular social class that it was targeting and was for both females and males. Another person thought that the age group for this magazine was broader (18-40) but also said that it was for both males and females and didn’t have a specific social class that it was focusing on. Most of the people agreed on that it was for both males and females and also on the question whether it had a specific social class (which was no), but when it came to the age group, there was quite a debate.
Q7. What do you feel I could improve on?
Most of the people thought that the magazine was fine the way it is, but some people did suggest that I should have not covered the front cover model with any writing.
Q8. Do you think that I should have included anything else in my magazine?
The majority of the people who completed the questionnaire didn't think that I should add anything else in the magazine. However somebody did think that more male articles could be included so that the magazine equally appealed to both men and women.

Magazine Developments

After I got my feedback from my teachers and other students I started to change up my front cover.

As for the masthead I moved it and actually changed the name of the name of the magazine as the old name wasn't quite working because of the extra "S". The font was changed as well as a lot of the feedback said that the font wasn't matching my genre. The new font fits the genre Rnb and Soul much more.

For the main image, there wasn't anything wrong with it in particular, but the face of the model was a bit blurry so that was the reason for the change of the image. Overall, I felt that the image on the left was much stronger, and the costume and body language fit the genre more than the other image.

I also changed some of the cover lines and underlined them to make them look more professional and to give the readers a better overview. The main cover line of my final front cover stands out much more, than the other one and the positioning of the cover lines are much more sophisticated. The house style is consistent throughout my other pages; therefore I felt the importance of portraying this on the front cover as well.

As for the barcode I simply moved it in a bit so that it wouldn't look that squashed. In my feedback it was also suggested that I should move the price and the website around, so I decided to move it closer to the masthead, as it gave it a decorative edge.

The two pages on the top were my first contents pages and the one on the bottom is my final one.
As for the image on the left the text wasn't that visible as the light on her leg was quite bright and for the image in general it looked stretch and her upper body looked squashed.  Also I felt that the image was quite provocative and therefore would only or more reach out to a particular audience
The pictures on the right side were stretched as well and were suffering of poor lighting.
The new and improved contents page that I created after my feedback is a whole new contents page actually; I changed everything except the actual text. I made sure that all the pictures on the right are now in proportion and are relevant to the magazine and as for the image on the left it is now more direct and sends out a more powerful message which the artist is representing in her interview as well.
I also added the magazines name and page numbers onto the contents page as the first one didn't have that.

As for my DPS I completely changed it. I started off by removing all the images on the top, as they looked overcrowded and took the main focus away from the actual artist. I replaced these multiple pictures by just one main image of the artist; this is a close up, because I wanted to capture the passion in her eyes for her changes. On the old DPS there wasn't a masthead, so I included it in the new DPS, for the readers to know who the article is about, but also to give the artist the recognition that she deserves. I totally changed the layout of the page, by challenging the conventions of the magazines in my case studies, I felt that this worked better and looked more professional for my magazine. I kept the same pull quote, however I might a slight change to the size and repositioned it. I also made the same changes to the introduction. In terms of maintaining my house style, I added page numbers and a logo, which abides by my colour scheme.

My first photo shoot

These are my first 2 models that I used ( Raychel and Kemzi).
I have booked a second photo shoot, because the majority of these pictures were blurry and also didn't represent my magazine that well. Now I have a better understanding of the camera use and what I want for my magazine as well.

Magazine Convention

Magazine Convention

Front cover

·         Bold logo/masthead, because this makes it stand out

·         Masthead  is usually written in a specific font, as this makes it unique and stand out as well

·         Masthead sometimes behind face in main image, they do this as it often looks better, but also if the artist is very famous as it might sell the magazine better than the actual logo, but the magazine still need to be well-known

·         There is usually a positioning statement under the masthead, as this gives information about the brand identity

·         The magazine’s cover always features the following: barcode, issues, date, price and sometimes website

·         Always includes main image, this catches the reader’s attention and helps to sell the magazine. It’s usually shot in a medium shot or close up

·         Full use of space, they make sure that there are enough cover lines and that the main image takes most of the space

·         The cover lines (also known as teasers) are always featured, as this gives an idea of the articles and the magazine itself.

·         The colour scheme is usually very simple but this depends on the magazine as well, if they want it to look busy there might be more colours, but if they want it to look rather calm and quiet they’ll use less colours and make sure that they are calm as well

Contents page

·         Colour scheme is usually simple and is consistent with the colours scheme of the front cover. Colour also links to the genre of the magazine

·         Text placed in columns, this is more appealing and they also link to the cover stories in the front cover

·         There is usually a main image, which also links to the main image on the front cover and to the cover story

·         Sometimes there is a message from the editor which is known as the editors note. They do this to invite the readers

Magazine newsstand

Introduction
This is a magazine newsstand. It contains a large variety of fashion and other women magazines. As you can see in this image, the magazines are stacked on top of each other. The most popular magazines are at the front, so that most of it is visible. The less known magazines are placed at the back, so only the masthead is visible.
Layout
In most cases the teasers are placed on the left third of the cover, which is often the only visible part of the magazine (and the masthead).
The masthead is always visible in each newsstand, well in most of the cases. The designs are always very striking to catch the reader’s attention.
The placement of the cover lines varies, as they can place them all over the front cover, but most of the times it is either on the left , right or just on both sides of the magazine’s cover.
Distribution
·         Online publishing: This is a more modern way of magazine publishing and also one of the most successful ones as it is published on the internet. Like this people don’t have to go out to buy it but can simply subscribe online for free or a monthly price and get it monthly into their emails etc.  With the new smartphone apps that have been introduced it gives customers the opportunity to simply go onto their phones to read their magazine and have a faster update (e.g. Vogue magazine app)
·         Postal subscription: This method of magazine distribution directly delivered the to the costumers house. It benefits the publisher, because it is a generated sale, there are no copies to waste.
·         Direct distribution: These are magazines that are for free. They go directly into the costumer’s hand.

Evaluation of college magazine

The image on the front cover is a medium close-up of a student. It relates to the cover lines. The girl on the image is college student.
She is happy and smiling, which suggests successes that she is happy with the college, and therefore draws the attention of the college audience to the magazine. The image was taken, at the gyms reception, this relates to the cover line.
Layout:
The model does not cover up the masthead, so that it is all visible, this could suggest that the magazine isn’t that famous so it can’t afford to have its brand name covered up. After the masthead, the cover lines are the biggest fonts.

The right side has the features and the cover story, text boxes. The colour scheme is a dark blue, black, red and white. The simple colour scheme is very effective in contents page, as the dark blue and black stands out from the white background.  However there could have been more images and the colours could have matched more with the actual college logo, to make it look more inviting.

What do I need to improve on?

·         Front cover -> Is quite plain there is only one cover line, that does relate to the image, but isn’t that obvious, so more cover lines and a main cover lines that pops out would work really well.

·         Colour Scheme -> I need a colour scheme that is both exciting and relevant to the genre or content of the magazine. The main problem is that the colour scheme does not go with the front cover.

·         Contents: the codes and conventions of this contents page is not normally how a contents page is. There aren’t any page numbers for the readers to look at so they would have to look through all pages even if they didn’t want to, also could the contents page have a different image to make it look more appealing.

Final picture for my LSC Magazine

As I didn't have such a good understanding of this task I only chose 1 picture.
